Cemetery History

According to a deed dated the 28th of February 1888, a local resident sold 120 square rods of the land on Oakwood Road for the purpose of establishing a cemetery.  That led to the following news article from the Milwaukee Sentinel on the 10th of February 1889 chronically the beginning of our beautiful Independent Cemetery.

"Several farmers, neighbors in the towns of Franklin and Oak Creek, finding the distance to the Forest Home Cemetery too far, have clubbed together to lay out a little cemetery of their own."

Then twenty-four years later, on the 30th of March, 1912, this same woman sold the cemetery trustees another similar parcel adjoining the existing land.

We have come a long way since the foresight of those early farmers.  Independent Cemetery is a tranquil, peaceful oasis in the city of Oak Creek.  The cemetery is the burial place of many of the early settlers of the township.
